Avon
is a community located in a section of the North Carolina Outer
Banks known as the Cape Hatteras National Shore in Dare County,
on Hatteras Island. Located ten miles south of Salvo and north of
Buxton on Hatteras Island. The town was renamed Avon from it original
Indian name of Kinnakeet by the U.S. Postal Service when a post
office was established there in 1883.
Avon
is a very popular vacation destination.There are plenty of rental
homes available. Most all offer excellent views and good access
to the beach. As with all Outer Banks locations, fishing is a popular
vacation activity and Avon has a pier for your fishing pleasure.
The U.S. Life-Saving Service constructed the Little Kinnakeet
Life Saving Station in 1874. One of seven built on the Outer Banks
to aid crews caught in the rough, treacherous waters offshore. It
remaining active, under the Coast Guard from 1915, until decommissioned
in 1954. |
