Located ten miles south of Salvo and north of Buxton on Hatteras Island. The town was renamed Avon from it original Indian name of Kinnakeet by the U.S. Postal Service when a post office was established there in 1883.

Avon is a very popular vacation destination. There are plenty of rental homes available. Most all offer excellent views and good access to the beach. As with all Outer Banks locations, fishing is a popular vacation activity and Avon has a pier for your fishing pleasure.

The U.S. Life-Saving Service constructed the Little Kinnakeet Life Saving Station in 1874. One of seven built on the Outer Banks to aid crews caught in the rough, treacherous waters offshore. It remaining active, under the Coast Guard from 1915, until decommissioned in 1954.
