Southern Shores on the NC Outer Banks is located just north of Kitty Hawk. The quiet mostly residential town of Southern Shores is primarily a private community. A choice of the locals seeking to keep commercialism in check. Established in 1979, Southern Shores encompasses a four square mile area. No public beach access is available, but visitors to Southern Shores are mostly attracted to this beautiful community for the hiking a bicycling trails it offers to the public. Only about 2,200 residents live in the area year round. Two civic organizations own the land not owned by private owners and they use the land for wildlife areas and recreational purposes. A network of paths used for recreation such as walking, biking and jogging, provides a relaxing tour through the area. Southern Shores also has a private country club for the golf enthusiasts, that is open to the public for play. Because of the lack of normal beach attractions only about 10,000 vacationers visit throughout the summer season.
